Dr. Flora Tassone
Dr. Flora Tassone is a Professor of Biochemistry at the University of California, Davis, and a molecular geneticist with over two decades of research dedicated to understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders.
Her work focuses on FMR1-associated conditions, where she has made foundational contributions to the study of CGG repeat instability, mosaicism, epigenetic regulation, and their clinical consequences. She identified FMR1 mRNA overexpression in premutation carriers, establishing RNA toxicity as a central pathogenic mechanism and contributing significantly to the characterization of fragile X–associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS).
Her current research integrates genetic, transcriptomic, metabolomic, and proteomic approaches to develop and validate molecular biomarkers aimed at improving diagnosis, disease monitoring, and therapeutic evaluation.

Molecular Biomarkers of FXTAS
Abstract
This session will present recent advances in identifying and validating molecular biomarkers for fragile X–associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS). Dr. Tassone will discuss integrative genetic, epigenetic, transcriptomic, and proteomic approaches that reveal molecular signatures associated with disease onset, severity, and progression. She will also highlight the translational potential of these biomarkers for improving diagnosis, patient stratification, and therapeutic evaluation.
